Winnipeg launches new transit network

Winnipeg Transit officially launched the Primary Transit Network and its feeder routes on Sunday, marking the largest change in the city’s transit system in history.
“We have the primary network that operates along all the major streets, functioning as much like a grid as Winnipeg’s unique street network will allow. It enables people to get all over the city,” said Bjorn Radstrom, manager of transit service development at the City of Winnipeg. “Then we have the feeder network that connects into that. Essentially, every route in the city was retired when service ended last night, and the new ones all started today.”
In addition to the new network, the On-Request service has expanded from four to 12 zones across Winnipeg. With On-Request, riders can request a trip a few minutes before they want to travel. The system will provide a location and time to meet the bus, which may detour to pick up and drop off other passengers along the way. Standard fares apply, and transfers are accepted. Winnipeg Transit expects wait times to range from 10 to 20 minutes.
The first in-service bus departed from Portage Avenue and Spence Street early Sunday morning.
According to the city, riders can expect more frequent, direct, and connected service.
